Tawakkul

التوكل

Virtue · Concept

Reliance on Allah — placing trust in Him after taking the means, as Musa did at the edge of the sea.

Overview

Tawakkul is trust in and reliance upon Allah. The Quran commands it after resolve and effort — "when you have decided, then rely upon Allah" (3:159) — and promises that whoever relies upon Allah, He is sufficient for him (65:3).

Musa makes tawakkul the test of faith for his people: "if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him" (10:84). At the sea, with Pharaoh's army behind them and his people certain of being overtaken, his reply was simply: "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me" (26:62).

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

Patience and reliance are distinct in the Quran but repeatedly appear together: the patient are told to rely on Allah, and reliance is what makes patience possible under pressure.
