Al-Ghafur

الغفور

Name of Allah

The All-Forgiving — who covers and forgives sins; invoked in the Quran's most hopeful verse on forgiveness.

Overview

Al-Ghafur — the All-Forgiving — is the name of Allah who covers sins and forgives them fully. It appears in the Quran's broadest promise of forgiveness: "Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (39:53).

The name is almost always paired with Ar-Rahim. Musa's prayer after the unintended killing is answered with it (28:16), and Yaqub promises to seek forgiveness for his sons from the One who is the Forgiving, the Merciful (12:98).
