The sacrifice of Ibrahim's son

ذبح ابن إبراهيم

Trial · Event

Ibrahim's vision that he must sacrifice his son, the son's assent, and the ransom given in his place.

Overview

Ibrahim tells his son that he has seen in a dream that he must sacrifice him, and the son answers that he will be found patient (37:102). The Quran then says that both submitted, and that the son was ransomed with a great sacrifice (37:107).

The Quran does not name the son. The majority of commentators identify him as Ismail; others hold that he was Ishaq. IslamicGraph records that identification as a disputed reading rather than as a statement of the text.
