Ibrahim

إبراهيم

Prophet · Messenger · Quranic figure

Abraham — the friend of Allah, father of Ismail and Ishaq, who raised the foundations of the House in Makkah.

Overview

Ibrahim (Abraham) is described in the Quran as a nation in himself, devoutly obedient and inclining to truth (16:120), and as one whom Allah took as an intimate friend (4:125). He rejected the idolatry of his people and his father, argued for the oneness of Allah from the movements of the stars, moon and sun (6:76–79), and was cast into a fire that Allah made cool (21:69).

In old age he was granted Ismail and Ishaq (14:39). With Ismail he raised the foundations of the House — the Ka'bah — praying that Allah accept it from them (2:127), after settling part of his family in a barren valley beside the sacred House (14:37). The Quran calls his way the religion of Ibrahim, the hanif (3:95).
