Salah

الصلاة

Act of worship · Concept

The prescribed prayer, commanded throughout the Quran and asked for by the prophets for their descendants.

Overview

Ṣalāh is the prescribed prayer. The Quran commands it repeatedly alongside zakāh (2:43), and shows it as something the prophets asked to be established in their own families: Ibrahim settled his descendants near the Sacred House so that they would establish prayer (14:37), and prayed to be made an establisher of prayer himself (14:40).

We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer].
