City · Place
Mecca — the city of the Ka'bah, the House whose foundations Ibrahim and Ismail raised; the qiblah and destination of Hajj.
Overview
Makkah (Mecca) is the city of the Ka'bah, described in the Quran as the first House established for mankind, "at Bakkah" (3:96). The Quran names the city as Makkah in 48:24 and as Bakkah in 3:96.
Ibrahim settled part of his family in its barren valley beside the sacred House (14:37) and, with Ismail, raised the foundations of the House (2:127). It is the birthplace of Muhammad ﷺ, the direction of prayer, and the destination of Hajj.
