Taqwa

التقوى

Virtue · Concept

God-consciousness — mindfulness of Allah that guards a person from what displeases Him; the Quran's measure of nobility.

Overview

Taqwa — often rendered God-consciousness, piety, or mindfulness of Allah — is the quality the Quran names as its own purpose: the Book is "guidance for the muttaqin" (2:2). It is the criterion of honour before Allah: "the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous (atqakum) of you" (49:13), and the best provision for the journey (2:197).

The Quran ties taqwa to other virtues: justice is "nearer to taqwa" (5:8), and the closing lesson of Surah Yusuf pairs it with patience (12:90). After the victory at Badr, the believers are told to have taqwa of Allah so that they might be grateful (3:123).

Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj.
