Madyan

مدين

Region · Place

Midian — the people of Shuayb, and the land where Musa found refuge, married, and worked for years before his call.

Overview

Madyan (Midian) is the community to which the prophet Shuayb was sent (7:85). It is also where Musa fled after leaving Egypt: "when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, 'Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way'" (28:22). There he watered the flock of two women, was taken in by their father, and agreed to work for him for eight or ten years in exchange for marriage (28:23–28).

Its precise location is usually placed in north-western Arabia, but the Quran itself gives no geographic coordinates; that placement rests on later geography, not on the text.

And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers.
