Mount Sinai

الطور

Mountain · Place

At-Tur — the Mount where Musa was called and received the Tablets; named Tur Sina' and Tur Sinin in the Quran.

Overview

The Quran refers to the Mount as at-Tur: Musa was called from its right side (19:52), Bani Israel were given an appointment at its right side (20:80), and it was raised above them when they were given the covenant (2:63). The names Tur Sina' (23:20) and Tur Sinin (95:2) also appear.

Musa's appointment of forty nights, his request to see his Lord, and the Tablets he was given (7:142–145) are traditionally placed here. The identification of the Quranic Mount with any particular modern peak — such as Jabal Musa in the Sinai Peninsula — is a matter of tradition and geography, not a statement of the Quran.

The Quran places the fire Musa saw "from the direction of the mount" and the call at the right side of the valley, which is why the sacred valley is usually located at the Mount. The text does not state the identification outright.

And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves."
