Musa at Mount Sinai

ميقات موسى عند الطور

Revelation · Event

Musa's forty-night appointment at the Mount, his request to see Allah, and the Tablets he received — while his people turned to the calf.

Overview

After the deliverance, Allah appointed for Musa thirty nights and completed them with ten (7:142) — the forty nights also mentioned in 2:51. Musa left Harun in charge of the people. At the appointment Allah spoke to him; when Musa asked to see Him, the mountain was levelled by Allah's manifestation and Musa fell unconscious (7:143). He was given the Tablets containing instruction and detailed explanation (7:145).

Meanwhile Bani Israel had taken the calf (2:51, 20:85–91). The Mount was later raised above them as they were made to take the covenant (2:63). The Quran calls the Mount at-Tur and speaks of its right side (19:52, 20:80).
