Maryam

مريم

Quranic figure

Mary — mother of Isa, chosen above the women of the worlds; the only woman named in the Quran, with a surah bearing her name.

Overview

Maryam (Mary) is the mother of Isa and the only woman the Quran names directly; Surah 19 bears her name. The Quran records that Allah chose her, purified her and chose her above the women of the worlds (3:42). Surah Maryam tells of her withdrawal from her family, the angel's announcement of a pure son, and her giving birth beneath a palm tree (19:16–26).

The Quran consistently identifies Isa as "the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam" (3:45), and it counts her among those who were truthful and devoutly obedient (66:12).
