Yaqub

يعقوب

Prophet · Quranic figure

Jacob — also called Israel; father of Yusuf, whose patience in loss the Quran holds up as 'beautiful patience'.

Overview

Yaqub (Jacob) is the son of Ishaq and the father of Yusuf. The Quran names him as Israel (3:93), which is why his descendants are called Bani Israel — the Children of Israel. In Surah Yusuf he responds to the loss of his son with the words "beautiful patience" (12:18, 12:83), and the surah closes with him seeking forgiveness for his sons from the One who is Al-Ghafur, Ar-Rahim (12:98).
